Brian Sumwalt

San Diego, CA native Brian Sumwalt grew up listening to a wide range of music, from mainstream bands like Nirvana and Metallica, to classics like Sinatra and Zeppelin. He credits Bonham as one of his early influences. Following a theme of versatility, Brian began professionally playing contemporary church music in his teens, while also gaining valuable experience touring in a show tunes/big band group. In recent years, mentors and friends Dave Elitch, Ilan Rubin, and Ron Bruner Jr. have all had a huge impact on his approach to the kit.

Brian spent his first few years in L.A. finishing up college and playing many local shows with a variety of different bands ranging from pop to metal. In 2012, he joined Panamanian hard rock band Cage9 (featuring members of Powerman 5000) as a full-time member. The band has had multiple successful US and international tours – most recently co-headlining with Bad Religion in Panama, as well as direct openers for Ozzy Osbourne, Sevendust, Queensryche, and Karnivool, among many others. Demonstrating his adaptability, in between pop sessions for Latin artists Jerau (Universal), Coco Jadad (Sony), and Southern California metal acts, Brian began summer 2014 touring the Western US supporting a full length album with indie band Little Galaxies.

Brian has toured and performed at notable festivals and venues throughout the US, as well as Central and South America, Mexico, Asia, Canada, and Southern Africa. Currently, in between tours, Brian remains busy with session work and devoting time to both studio and live acts throughout Southern California.
